Trying to find hard rock at the Grammys is no easy task. Trying to find 8os-related hard rock at the Grammys is damn near impossible.
But here goes.
4. AC/DC – 2015
In 2015, the Recording Academy welcomed AC/DC to the stage to kickoff the 57th annual Grammy awards. The reaction was mixed. Older viewers and social media users praised the band’s performance. Younger viewers, however, were confused by the opening and wondering who invited the old guys. Over the years, AC/DC has been nominated for seven Grammys and won one.
3. Metallica/Lady Gaga – 2017
After the Grammys were heavily ridiculed when Jethro Tull won the Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Recording award over Metallica in 1989, Metallica became an Academy favorite. The Academy might not have known what hard rock or metal was, but it realized it couldn’t go wrong by giving Metallica awards. At the 59th Grammy awards Metallica teamed up with Lady Gaga for Moth Into Flame. During the live broadcast, James Hetfield’s microphone had issues and Lady Gaga picked up the slack. Metallica released dress rehearsal footage to show “what it would have sounded like.” Metallica has had 18 Grammy nominations with eight wins.
2. Guns N’ Roses – 1989
Fresh on the scene and scaring the shit out of parents everywhere, a toned down Guns N’ Roses performed a lengthy version of Patience with Slash really showing off his musical chops during a sick, bluesy guitar solo. Guns N’ Roses would go on to be nominated for three Grammys, but never taking home the prize.
1. Metallica – 1989
This is the performance that shows what might have been if the Academy would have embraced hard rock and heavy metal in the 1980s and early 90s. The band’s performance of One is powerful and made the aforementioned snub even that more obvious. The band would perform the song again in 2014 with pianist Lang Lang, but it was more proof that Metallica is best when it’s simply Metallica.
